Year 7 Catch up Premium
The Year 7 Catch up Premium is allocated to schools on the basis of the prior attainment of year 7 pupils in English and Maths. Where attainment has fallen below expected in either subject the College was allocated £500 per pupil. In 2016-2017, the total allocation to the College was £10,627.
In 2016-2017 the College took the decision to use the catch up premium in English and Mathematics to enable smaller group sizes to be sustained. It was our view that pupils, with low prior achievement, would benefit from being taught in smaller groups with greater opportunity for rapid intervention.
In addition the College undertook specific strategies in English and Mathematics:
In English underachieving pupils specific areas of weakness were identified through testing on AR Reader. These pupils then received a 10 week Ruth Miskin Literacy intervention with a Higher Level Teaching Assistant.
In Mathematics underachieving pupils specific areas of weakness were identified through teacher assessment. These pupils then received a short term intervention with a Mathematcis Higher Level Teaching Assistant and were subsequently retested.
The associated costs with doing this were in employing additional teaching staff to deliver the two additional groups and teaching assistant time in delivering testing and interventions.
The impact of this expenditure will be reported following the first internal PPE assessment in the 2017-2018 academic year.
